The Journal of Cognitive Rehabilitation (JCR) launched its first issue at a world wide conference on brain injury rehabilitation in February 1983. When we started working on that first issue in the fall of 1982 it was intended to be a small newsletter addressing the interest of a small group of professionals who were in the beginning stages of organizing themselves for the advancement of new and better methods for brain injury rehabilitation. By the time we were ready to go to press, what we had actually put together was more of a specialized magazine containing general interest articles, personal experience articles, research reports and something totally new to the rehab scene at that time, computerized therapy exercises. The software was in the form of fully listed computer programs that the therapist or patient could type into their systems. The programs provided therapy exercises to help restore visual perception, eye/hand coordination, attentional skills, memory skills, etc.. JCR was an immediate success and within a few months we had articles coming in from all over the world. The journal has been truly multidisciplinary as our authors represent professionals from nearly every clinical rehabilitation field as well as family members and the injured person.

We are now in our twenty-second year and still going strong but that is not to say we haven't gone through our share of changes and reformulations over the years! The software section, called SoftTools has evolved from the Atari computer, through the Apple II series, to PC DOS based programs to Windows based programs and now to Internet based and delivered software. Each issue of the Journal contains a software therapy application that can be run directly through your internet browser while you are visiting the site or it can be downloaded to your computer so you can run it offline. We have two CD collections of our past softtools (SoftTools CD 94-98 and SoftTools CD 99-03) that can be purchased online from our home page.

In 1986 we added a brain injury rehabilitation facility directory that offers free display advertisment to facilities who subscribe to the journal. We also added a distinguished board of reviewers so that our research report section could become refereed.

In 2003 we began publishing the journal on the web as well as on paper and in 2004 we went totally web based with no paper publication at all.

Even with the growth and changes, we are basically the same friendly, down-to-earth publication that can be read and utilized by the patient, family, doctor and therapists.

The Journal of Cognitive Rehabilitation circulates world wide. We are in medical facilities, libraries and private homes in all 50 states and in 35+ foreign countries. We are read by physicians, psychologists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, rehabilitation specialists, students, families of brain injured persons and by those who are the focus of the journal-- persons with impaired brain functions. At least one-fourth of our subscribers are the injured persons and/or their families.

Facility Articles

We invite any facility to prepare and submit an article concerning their program for brain impairment rehabilitation. The article should provide a general overview of your rehabilitation program and contain photographs, case studies and any forms, techniques or procedures used by your facility that you have found useful and are willing to share with others in the field.

General Interest Articles

General interest articles have been published in JCR covering topics from theories of brain functioning to converting a guitar pick for use as an artist's paint brush holder (i.e. for a paretic patient). A number of authors have shared treatment plans, questionnaires, rating systems, therapy exercises and testing procedures in a manner in which they could be copied directly from the pages of the journal by therapists for their own use. We welcome submissions of these types of articles, even from those of you who may not consider yourself to be a writer. We can help to get your article into publishable form. General interest articles do not have to strictly conform to the rules and format governing Research Reports (presented below) with the exception that any references you include be in proper format. If you are not familiar with the APA publication guidelines, send your article anyway and we will help get it in shape.

From the Patient's Point of View Articles

The Patient's Point of View (PPoV) is the section of JCR about which we have received the most feedback (all very positive, I might add). These articles really provide others, with brain impairment, the kind of information and experiences with which they can identify and the kind of support they just cannot get elsewhere. We try to print every article that is printable but we find it difficult to keep up with the number of submissions we receive. In 1993, we devoted an entire issue to PPoV.

Research Report Articles

The Report section of JCR is reserved for original formal reports of scientific research in the areas of impaired brain functioning and rehabilitation. Manuscripts can be submitted on any relevant subject at any time. Each submission is first reviewed 'in house' and if found to be acceptable in terms of subject matter and format it is sent without author identifying information to two members of our distinguished review board for their review. It typically takes from three to six months to reach a final decision on acceptance or rejection of a manuscript.

Facility Directory

The Facility Directory was developed to keep our readers informed of the rehabilitation treatment placement options available in their communities. If you are a professional providing rehabilitation services for the head-injured, stroke population, learning disabled, mildly mentally handicapped, cognitively impaired psychiatric population, and/or multiply handicapped, we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to let people know what services you have to offer. We would like to stress that no facility, clinic or private practice is too small to be listed in the Directory. By maintaining an Institutional level subscription to the Journal of Cognitive Rehabilitation you are entitled to a free listing in our bimonthly paper Journal and on our new web based JCR. Ad spaces are 2 1/4" X 2". You may call to arrange for your subscription and/or discuss your Directory Ad.

SoftTools Therapy Software

SoftTools software (mini-versions of some of the therapy software offered by www.neuropsychonline.com) is a regular feature of JCR. A program is available to run or download from the internet (for subscribers). Each program provides a unique exercise that can be incorporated into your cognitive rehabilitation program. The programs in the past have addressed such skills as basic attentional skills, simple to complex visuoperceptual and visuomotor skills, memory skills and problem solving skills. The software can be downloaded and/or run on both PCs and Macs. The exercises are primarily graphical in nature so language demands are slight! SoftTools produced after the 1998 subscription year may require that you have the Macromedia Flash and/or the Macromedia Shockwave plugins installed in your web browser. These plugins are provided for free from Macromedia and there is a link on our site that will facilitate your obtaining the plugins.
You can browse and purchase past SoftTools clicking here or on the SoftTools CD link on our home page.
